P&G builds first ever health center in Barangay Baganihan, Davao to help women, children and indigenous people

P&G Philippines partners with Habitat for Humanity Philippines to improve everyday health and hygiene of the marginalized and vulnerable communities in Barangay Baganihan, Marilog District, Davao City

Procter & Gamble Philippines (P&G), the leading consumer goods manufacturer of health and hygiene products such as Safeguard, Tide, Joy, Head & Shoulders, works with their global partner Habitat for Humanity Philippines to help vulnerable communities in Marilog, Davao. As an extension of P&G’s flagship #SAFEWash Program that seeks to educate schoolchildren and families on proper handwashing and give access to handwashing facilities, this partnership empowered more families in Davao through building of the community’s first ever health center and enabling the residents with various health, hygiene, and sanitation practices.

P&G and Habitat for Humanity Philippines’ initiative aims to improve the quality of life of almost 2,000 individuals in Barangay Baganihan, Marilog, Davao City through a holistic and integrated health and WASH program. It seeks to impart behavioral change especially to the marginalized and vulnerable sectors including women, children, persons with disabilities and indigenous people and to decrease WASH related diseases in the local community. The new P&G Health Center will improve families’ access to primary health care, as well as to proper pre- and post-natal care for pregnant women as the center features accredited birthing, labor, and treatment rooms.

“This partnership is very timely as it strengthened the families’ resilience against COVID-19 through basic health, food and nutrition, and WASH training. We are grateful to P&G, a significant global partner of Habitat Philippines, for helping us achieve the holistic support that we envisioned for the Marilog community,” said Lala Baldelovar, Habitat for Humanity Philippines Chief Development Officer.

Before the turnover of the Health Center, Habitat for Humanity Philippines, with the help of partner experts and local government, deployed various information & educational materials and on-the-ground trainings and workshops for the families over the course of one year. They were trained and given the importance of maternal health, hygiene and sanitation, food and nutrition and solid waste management in keeping their families healthy.  They were also taught prevention of communicable diseases and organic urban gardening for a healthier and sustainable environment.

All families also received over 1 months’ supply of P&G hygiene kits containing Safeguard bath soaps, Tide laundry soaps, Rejoice Shampoo, Whisper sanitary pads, and other WASH essentials to help them practice proper hygiene and sanitation.

“Now more than ever, P&G’s mission to help families have safer, cleaner and healthier homes with our hygiene brands and programs becomes even more critical. This is just the beginning of the 2,021 acts of good we are doing globally this year as part of P&G’s Lead with Love campaign,” said Anna Legarda-Locsin, P&G Communications Director.

P&G has supported communities and consumers through unexpected challenges for more than 180 years globally and 86 years in the country – and stepped up to provide significant support for COVID-19 relief through major contributions of health, hygiene and cleaning products, medical-grade face masks and personal protective equipment in 2020. This year, P&G has recently announced its commitment to 2,021 acts of good to do more and do better – for communities, equality and our planet.
