JASMINE AT NEW WORLD MAKATI HOTEL HIGHLIGHTS ITS FAMOUS MACHANG (ZONGZI) TO CELEBRATE THE ANNUAL DRAGONBOAT FESTIVAL

New World Makati Hotel invites guests to share in the celebration of the annual Dragon Boat Festival with its well-loved machang (sticky rice dumplings), also called “zongzi”, from Jasmine in traditional and red bean flavors. This year’s festival falls on the 14th of June.

Jasmine’s machang is available in two flavors: traditional with pork, yellow bean, salted egg, mushroom and glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaf; and red bean with glunitous rice also wrapped in lotus leaf. An option for single or double layered filling is also offered.

Packaged in dim sum basket-inspired boxes with gold foil logo stamping, these flavorful treats are best enjoyed with oolong tea or any hot tea of choice.

Machang are traditionally eaten during the Duanwu Festival (Doubler Fifth Festival) which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, and commonly known as the “Dragon Boat Festival” in English. The festival falls each year on a day in late-May to mid-June in the Western calendar.

Each year on the on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival takes place in China. In Hong Kong, Hunan, and Hangzhou, people gather on colourful dragon boats to race along rivers. The origins of this boating spectacular also lie with the myth of Qu Yuan, the famous poet commemorated by this delicacy, when villagers paddled out in their vessels to try and save him. Zongzi are the Dragon Boat Festival’s official food and families unite to prepare them together on the eve of the festival before eating them for breakfast the next day.

Single and double layer machang are priced at PHP798 and PHP1,388, respectively. Prices are nett. Pick-up of orders is until 30 June 2021. Deliveries may be made for bulk orders within a 3 km distance.
